本片是第一部澳大利亚独立制作的长片，根据真人真事改编。主人公东尼自小得不到父亲的关爱，一直生活在两个哥哥的阴影之中，其母亲也长期饱受经常酗酒父亲的折磨。东尼就是在这样的环境中自我成长起来，通过自己非凡的游泳天赋和努力，最终考入哈佛大学，赢得奥林匹克世界冠军。
一． 父爱
本片很多镜头都在描述这位父亲海罗德，自小受到社会的不公。由于家庭贫穷，海罗德的母亲只能出卖自己身体来维持生活，海罗德自小在踢足球方面就很有天赋，无奈因为家庭原因无法实现自己的梦想。因此他的这种情节发泄到孩子身上，相比于两个哥哥，弟弟东尼显得更文静，偏爱于钢琴，看书，游泳。因此海罗德偏爱于两个大的，而看不起东尼，说他是软蛋。而另外一方面，遭遇到自小的不幸，他只会通过酗酒来压抑自己，在酗酒之后殴打自己的妻子，打骂自己的孩子。
通过这一方面，我真的仿佛看到了自己老爸的影子，我老爸也是一样，自小家里条件不好，兄弟姐妹众多，而自己的父母对自己从来都不正眼相看，以此造成了他的性格。他酗酒，在喝醉了之后就把气撒在我母亲身上。对我严厉，不顺心的时候就破口大骂，你这个没用的家伙。自小受父亲那么多气，开始一直怀疑自己，是否真的有那么差劲，后来慢慢的只想要自己做好给他看，我并不是像他说的那样。或许当他看到我的成绩的时候，他心里有暗自开心，但是他还是表现的不以为然的样子。对于这样的一种父爱真是又爱又恨，可能父亲心里一直无法和解的是对于这个社会的不公，而更无法和解的是自己。
二． 东尼
东尼自小不受父亲喜爱，被父亲骂成软蛋，意志力不坚定，白白生了他。在自己刚要进入青年锦标赛时，父亲为了证明哥哥比他行，秘密的对哥哥集训来打败自己。但东尼并没有因此而气馁，而是通过自己的努力去像父亲证明自己才是最棒的那一个。
东尼心里一定也有特别憎恨过父亲，酗酒，欺负母亲，像这样的行为简直就不像一个男人，不是一个合格的父亲。东尼通过不断的强大自己，强大自己的内心，明白了自己心里面追寻的东西，更明白自己要成为一个怎样的人。
